Description:

SMTPit is a FileMaker Pro plug-in that allows you to send email
directly from FileMaker Pro. You do not need any separate email
sending applications (like Eudora or Outlook) to use SMTPit. All
you need is SMTPit and FileMaker Pro. For a complete description of
how to use SMTPit, please consult the SMTPit Guide provided with
this archive in Adobe Acrobat (PDF) format. (If you do not have
Adobe Acrobat Reader, you could download it from Adobe's website
at <http://www.adobe.com/reader/>.)

Installation:

Windows:

To install the plug-in on the Windows platform, first quit
FileMaker Pro if it is open. Next unzip or unstuff the contents
of the SMTPit .zip or .sit file into a directory. After you have
unzipped or unstuffed the archive file into a directory, you
should find a file in that directory named "SMTPit_WIN.fmx". This
is the plug-in file. Copy this file to the directory named
"System" inside your FileMaker Pro application directory. This
directory is usually on your hard drive in a directory similar to
this:

c:\Program Files\FileMaker\FileMaker Pro\System\

If you had SMTPit installed previously, you may find a file in
your System directory named "SMTPit.fmx". You will need to delete
this before starting FileMaker Pro so that you do not have two
versions of the plug-in installed.

After installation, you can start up FileMaker Pro, and the
plug-in should automatically be active. You can then open the
"SMTPit_Readme.fp5" database to begin exploring SMTPit. If you
need more help installing the plug-in, please see the SMTPit Guide
PDF provided in this archive.

Macintosh:

To install the plug-in on the Macintosh platform, first quit
FileMaker Pro if it is open. Next unstuff or unzip the contents
of the SMTPit .sit or .zip file into a folder. After you have
unstuffed or unzipped the archive file into a folder, you should
find a couple of files in that folder named "SMTPit_OS9" and
"SMTPit_OSX". (If you downloaded the .zip file, the Mac plug-ins
will be stuffed and named "SMTPit_OS9.sit" and "SMTPit_OSX.sit".
You will need to unstuff them on your mac before installing them.)
These are the plug-in files, one for each Mac OS. Copy the version
that corresponds to your operating system into the folder named
"FileMaker Extensions" inside your FileMaker Pro application
folder. This folder is usually on your hard drive in a folder
similar to this:

<Your HD>:Applications:FileMaker Pro:FileMaker Extensions:

If you had SMTPit installed previously, you may find a file in
your FileMaker Extensions folder named "SMTPit". You will need
to delete this before starting FileMaker Pro so that you do not
have two versions of the plug-in installed.

After installation, you can start up FileMaker Pro, and the
plug-in should automatically be active. You can then open the
"SMTPit_Readme.fp5" database to begin exploring SMTPit. If you
need more help installing the plug-in, please see the SMTPit
Guide PDF provided in this archive.

Quick Start:

To begin exploring SMTPit open the SMTPit_Readme database which
has links to all of the other example databases. You can try
out any of the example databases. Please read through the SMTPit
Guide documentation PDF for a complete understanding of each
of the databases. The documentation covers some of the scripts in
the example databases, step by step.

If you have never worked with plug-ins in FileMaker before, or even
if you have, please read through the "How to Use Plug-ins.pdf"
document that came in this archive and/or is available on our
website. The document covers all the basics of using plug-ins with
FileMaker, and also describes how to use plug-ins with the FileMaker
Server Auto Update feature as well as in Bound/Runtime Solutions.

All of the example database are free and are not password protected.
Feel free to examine them, change them around to test out other SMTPit
features, and just try things out. You can use the example databases
simply as examples on how to incorporate SMTPit into your own databases,
or as starting points for new databases that fit your specific needs.
Please keep in mind that the example databases are just that, "examples".
They are by no means the only way to integrate SMTPit with FileMaker
Pro.

Features:

- Send email directly from FileMaker Pro to your mail server. SMTPit
does not require a separate email sending application.
- Set all the major email headers like To, From, Subject, CC, BCC, or
add your own custom email headers.
- Send any number of attachments specifying their filenames from fields
    in your database.
- Break your email content into Header, Body, and Footer sections to
make it easier to compose messages.
- SMTPit supports Japanese and Central and Eastern European characters.
You no longer have to fool around with AppleScripts to convert
between SJIS and JIS. SMTPit does it all automatically for you. All
you have to do is type your Japanese or Central and Eastern European
characters into your localized version of FileMaker Pro, and send
    the email!
- Advanced Connect and Disconnect functions for use with Mass Email
Solutions. The Send function works as it always did, connect, send
email, disconnect, if you use it by itself. However, if you use the
Connect and Disconnect functions, the Send function will detect that
you are already connected and will simply send the email. This makes
it much more efficient for Mass Email Solutions.
- Integrated Status Window. SMTPit has the ability to show you what it's
doing as it's doing it. You no longer have to wonder if it's frozen,
or if it's just sending that large attachment.
- Full support for the OS X, with improved support for 10.3.
- Authentication support. SMTPit allows you to log in to mail servers
that require authentication before allowing you to send emails.
SMTPit supports the Plain, Login, and CRAM-MD5 Authentication types.
- Multi-tasking support for Mac OS 9. You can run FMP/SMTPit on the
same machine as your mail server and be able to send email to it.
(We do, however, highly recommend that you do not do this. You will
get much better performance by running FMP and your mail server on
    two separate machines.)
- Email Address Validation. SMTPit checks the email addresses you give
it to see if they "look" like valid email addresses. If SMTPit
cannot find anything that looks like a valid email address, it will
return an error. This helps manage databases where users may not
give a valid email address, like on a web form.
- Support for Multipart/Alternative Text and HTML emails. You can send
emails that have a Text part, an HTML part, Inline HTML Images,
    *and* Attachments.
- Send and Connect functions can now take optional parameters, like
bringing up a dialog if the email was sent successfully, or to
return a transcript of the interaction between SMTPit and your
mail server to help track down sending problems.

For a complete description of how to use SMTPit please refer to the
SMTPit_Guide.pdf file. (If you do not have Adobe Acrobat, you can
download it from Adobe at <http://www.adobe.com/reader/>)

Feedback:

Comm-Unity Networking Systems would like to know how you are using
SMTPit. Send us an email telling us about your solution and we will
place a link to it on our site. We will also be creating a user
solutions section to the site for you to display solutions created
with Comm-Unity Networking Systems' plug-ins. Our website is
<http://www.cnsplug-ins.com/>, and our support email address for
SMTPit is <SMTPit@cnsplug-ins.com>.

Demo Version:

You can evaluate SMTPit for 30 days for free, however, after 30 days,
SMTPit should be removed from your hard drive if you do not purchase
a License to use it. The demo version of SMTPit displays a splash
screen and appends a message identifying each email as being sent
with a demo version of the plug-in. Once you purchase a License to
use SMTPit, you will be sent a Registration Number to register your
copy of SMTPit. After registering your copy, the splash screen and
demo message will go away.

SMTPit History:

-- 4-12-2007 SMTPit 3.1.3 released.

Fixed a problem where using the plug-in with a runtime on Windows
prevented the runtime solution from completely closing. Fixed
other random bugs. Removed the OS 9 version of the plug-in
because we have no way to compile it anymore. (If you need the
OS 9 version, use the one from 3.1.2 if you still have it,
otherwise, you can email us for it.)

-- 10-12-2004 SMTPit 3.1.2 released.

Fixed a few minor bugs.

-- 1-29-2004 SMTPit 3.1.1 released.

Fixed a bug with the Password field in the Configuration Dialog
on Windows. Added a check in the Send function that made sure
it could open the attachments before trying to send the email.
(It used to only check when it was actually sending the email,
meaning that if the attachment couldn't be read, it would send
the email without the attachment. The check is now just earlier
in the process.) Fixed a problem on Windows where certain ISPs
would include an @ symbol when setting the Host Name of the
computer, causing mail servers to give an error when SMTPit was
trying to identify itself. Fixed a problem on OS X where the
status dialog wasn't updating properly.

-- 1-8-2004 SMTPit 3.1 released.

Adds new Configuration and Status Dialogs to both platforms. Made
the "Dialog=yes|no" parameter in the Send Function completely
overwrite the default value from the Configuration Dialog.
Corrected problems on the Mac platform with accented characters
in File Paths. Fixed a problem with Authenticating with mail
servers. Fixed a problem in the email address validator. Fixed
a bug with specifying HTML Inline Images. Now encoding
attachment filenames that have accented characters. Fixed the
"signature separator / --" problem someone reported. Fixed/
Added some Content-Type stuff to allow a user to specify content
types of files based on the file extension. Added support
for inline flash attachments. Added partial support for
posix style paths and the user folder alias (a tilde "~" at the
beginning) on OS X. Fixed some problems with initial "HELO"
command sent to mail servers. Fixed a typo in the Content-Type
of HTML emails with inline images, which caused problems with
some email clients.

-- 10-22-2002 SMTPit 3.0.12 released.

Adds OpenTransport Contexts to Mac OS X to fix some connection
related problems. Fixes a problem with sending multiple inline
attachments with regular attachments on the Mac.

-- 8-20-2002 SMTPit 3.0.11 released.

Fixes a problem with 2 seat licenses.

-- 8-7-2002 SMTPit 3.0.10 released.

Several bug fixes for both Mac and Win. Better support for OS X.

-- 10-4-2001 SMTPit 3.0.7 released.

This version fixes a bug with the Register function that caused
it to fail if a previous version of SMTPit had been registered
on that machine.

-- 9-19-2001 SMTPit 3.0.6 released.

This version fixes several things. There was a small cosmetic bug
associated with a single To email address that did not have the
angled brackets around it. This bug added a space before the email
address. This also changes the Content-Type of inline jpeg images
from "image/jpg" to "image/jpeg", which seems to be more supported.
(It makes Mac Outlook Express and Win Eudora see that it is indeed
a jpeg that it can use.) Finally, this version fixes a Mac only
bug that caused the system to completely hang when closing FMP
on some systems with Mac OS 9.2.1.

-- 9-04-2001 SMTPit 3.0.4 released.

This version fixes a bug with displaying the Configuration Dialog
on Mac OS X. It also fixes a few bugs with saving the preference
files on Macs with more than one volume. This version also fixes
a bug where if the Default Host in the Configuration Dialog was
set to a single space, and no Host was defined with the
HostAssign function, then SMTPit wouldn't report a "Missing Host"
error.

-- 8-28-2001 SMTPit 3.0.3 released.

This version fixes a few bugs, mostly dealing with the Japanese
encoding of emails.

-- 8-22-2001 SMTPit 3.0.2 released.

This fixes a bug in the AssignAll function where the From
Email Address was reeiving the same email address as the To
Email Address.

-- 8-21-2001 SMTPit 3.0.1 released.

This fixes a bug on the Macintosh where the Headers and Footers
in the Configuration Dialog were getting cut off at 255
characters.

-- 8-6-2001 SMTPit 3.0.0 Final released.

This is the official release of SMTPit 3.0.0 Final. This release
also fixes a problem where the Content-Transfer-Encoding of
Japanese emails was set improperly. It now is set to the correct
"7bit" that it needs to be in order for Japanese email clients
to correctly interpret the email. It also fixed a bug where the
To, CC, and From email addresses were not getting encoded
properly.

-- 8-4-2001 SMTPit 3.0.0b4 released.

This version adds support for Localized character in the To, CC,
From, and User Defined Headers. It also fixes a small bug
introduced in Mac 3.0.0b3 where random characters would show up in
the HTML body where blank lines should be.

-- 8-1-2001 SMTPit 3.0.0b3 released.

This version fixes a few more spelling mistakes in the Mac
Configuration Dialog. It also fixes a problem when multiple
inline HTML images are on the same line.

-- 7-25-2001 SMTPit 3.0.0b2 released.

This version fixed the Macintosh status window to correctly show
the information. It also fixed a few spelling mistakes in the Mac
Configuration Dialog.

-- 7-23-2001 SMTPit 3.0.0b1 released.

This version brings many enhancements and new features to
SMTPit, including Japanese and Central and European
character support, a new Status Window, OS X support, new
Connect and Disconnect buttons, Authentication support,
and many other things.

-- 8-10-2000 SMTPit 2.5.0 officially released out of beta.

This version fixes a few bugs that were brought to our attention
in the beta testing period. It also adds one new feature: the
ability to define the column where SMTPit breaks lines before
sending to the mail server.

-- 7-26-2000 SMTPit 2.5.0b1 released.

This version adds HTML Email support and Inline HTML Images for
your HTML emails. The Macintosh version has now been stabilized
and both Macintosh and Windows versions are equal in
functionality and features.

-- 6-4-99 SMTPit 2.0 released.

This version brings attachments, email headers, better
documentation, new dialog boxes, and plug-in registration so that
you only have to download it once.

-- 4-16-99 SMTPit 1.03 released.

This version fixes a few bugs. Headers and footers will now show
returns appropriately. This version also adds a new function:
SMTP-FromNameAssign which will allow you to set a from name. Also
added is a default from name in the configuration box.

-- 3-22-99 SMTPit 1.0 released.

-- 3-10-99 First public release, version 1.0b1

Known Issues:

-- Windows: There is a problem if you send an email message with
SMTPit and then break your internet connection by hand. To solve the
problem, make sure that you have an internet connection before you
start sending email, and maintain that connection until you are
through sending email. If you have to break the connection, make
sure to reestablish your connection before sending email again.

-- Macintosh: You must close the SMTPit Status Window before
closing FileMaker Pro. If you do not, FileMaker Pro will give
you an error stating that it cannot write to the disk. The
easiest way to ensure that the SMTPit Status Window is closed
is to put a call to SMTP-HideStatus in a Close script that
you define in Edit->Preferences->Document for your main
database.
